Griffon Studios, the new 566 flat student housing complex in Battersea has opened. The accommodation complex, which is situated near to Clapham Common, incorporates a host of amenities, including gardens, a gym and a common room. The full opening of the complex will take place over a period, with 462 of the studio flats being made available for use now, and the 114 remaining ones being readied for the start of the 2012-13 academic year.
The accommodation is a joint development between Imperial College and Berkeley Homes, and was built with the aim of providing much needed new housing for postgraduate students based in London. It is part of an ongoing plan to better the housing provision for postgraduates in the city – which also includes new halls of residence at their West London campus.
However, while Griffon Studios is not solely for use by those studying at Imperial College, its students are to be given priority. The Director of Commercial Studies for Imperial College, Jane Neary, said:
“We’re delighted Griffon Studios is up and running, and receiving its new residents. There is a shortage of high quality postgraduate accommodation in the capital in general so we hope the Studios will be a great new addition for Imperial’s postgraduate population and postgraduates across London.”
The development has been sold to another company, Legal and General Property; however the agreed terms of the sale give Imperial the lease for a 45 year period, after which ownership of the property reverts back to them.
